Tip Calculator

Work out the tip and split any bill in seconds.

person
Tip amount
$9.00
Total bill
$59.00

Worked examples

$50 bill, 18% tip
Tip is $9.00, so the total is $59.00. Split two ways that's $29.50 each.
$120 dinner for 4, 20% tip
Tip is $24.00, total $144.00, which is $36.00 per person.

How the tip calculator works

Tipping math is a single percentage applied to your bill, then optionally divided by the number of people at the table:

  • Tip amount = bill × (tip % ÷ 100)
  • Total = bill + tip amount
  • Per person = total ÷ number of people

So a $50 bill with an 18% tip gives a tip of 50 × 0.18 = $9.00 and a total of $59.00.

Choosing a percentage

In the United States, tipping is customary for table service. A quick guide:

  • 15%: acceptable for standard service.
  • 18%: a common default and what many card terminals suggest first.
  • 20%+: for service you were happy with, or larger groups where gratuity may be expected.

For counter service, coffee, or takeout, tipping is discretionary and smaller amounts are normal.

Splitting the bill

When you set the number of people, the calculator divides the total (bill plus tip) evenly. If your group ordered very differently, it is fairer to work out the tip on the whole bill and then split by what each person actually had.

A note on tax

Tip is traditionally figured on the pre-tax subtotal. The gap between tipping on pre-tax versus post-tax is usually a matter of cents, so use whichever is easier. Enter the subtotal here if you want to be precise.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal tip percentage in the US?
For sit-down restaurant service, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard, with 18% a common default. 20% or more signals excellent service. For counter service or takeout, tipping is optional and usually smaller.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guides generally suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small. This calculator applies the percentage to whatever bill amount you enter, so enter the subtotal if you want a pre-tax tip.
How do I split a bill with an uneven tip?
This tool splits the tip and total evenly across the number of people you set. For an uneven split, calculate the tip on the full bill first, then divide each person's share manually based on what they ordered.
Is the tip calculated before or after the discount?
If you have a coupon or discount, tip on the amount you actually pay after the discount for the food and service, i.e. enter the discounted subtotal.
